A friend of mine told me about a dilemma a friend of his was in; she became my client. She thought photography was just about having a camera and taking random shots, hoping it will manifest as beautiful renderings of art. She found a cousin of hers who claimed he took a photography course in college to help her with the corporate event for her office.

On the day if her office event, everything was smooth and perfect. It all went wrong when pictures of the event surfaced, and they were horrible. She couldn’t hide her sadness, she got into trouble with her boss, thankfully, she was able to save her job. Since then she has been a fan of mine because I deliver exactly what she needs when she has corporate events she has to handle

The importance of having the right photographer do to your event can not be overemphasized. Your event is stored in photos, and they remain vivid to you and your loved ones for years to come. The truth is, getting the perfect photographer is a Herculean task, an event photographer is more than a person good at taking selfies. It requires finesse, a clear vision, and a lot of commitment from all parties involved. As a professional event photographer, I have handled more events than I can count and I am sure I can give you the valid advice you need.

There are steps you need to follow to get the best event photographer and get him to give you the best photographs for your events. This is what this blog post is about. I will explicitly explain how to go about it. As said earlier, I am an event photographer, I know my onions, and I am willing to help you.

Here are some tips when looking for an event photographer

You need to search for top event photographers on Google

Google they say is your friend, and it is one of the best ways to get a photographer. You have also availed the opportunity to see what they have to offer as they would have a portfolio for your viewing pleasure. The portfolio is the most viable tool in evaluating a photographer. You will know instantly if you like his work or not.

Look out for services that rank on the first page. Google doesn’t joke with its rankings; you must be good and provide value and good work to rank well.

Check out reviews and evaluate them the best way you can

Search for reviews as well. This will give you a bird’ eye view of what you will be getting. Some businesses pay for a review, so it is best you take it with a pinch of salt.

Contact your prospective event photographer, you need to talk to him/her one on one

Get your prospective photographer contact info and conduct a phone interview asking valid questions such as:

  • What is your level of experience?
  • What services are included in your packages?
  • How many hours of coverage time are we getting
  • Do you mind running on overtime and how much does it cost?
  • How many other events do you have on the day of my event?
  • What happens if you get sick? Do you have someone else to handle the job?
  • How many photographers are on your team? Do you have a backup photographer?
  • Will you edit all the photos or just the ones we chose?
  • How long will it take to deliver the job?
  • What will you wear to the event?
  • What kind of equipment do you use?
  • Will there be a contract?

How much can you afford and is what you have enough to get a professional photographer?

Photography should not be an afterthought, have a set budget, this is very helpful, but put in mind that photography services do not come cheap. For most people, photography comes last on the list. This doesn’t work if you want your event covered properly. A cheap photographer might not give the best so ensure you pay enough to get the best.

Before you choose, get to look at the contract and ensure your budget is enough to carry the photography expenses. After choosing who you want to work with, you can invite him for lunch and discuss the job you have at hand.
